The state Xinhua news agency declared that the People’s Liberation Army commenced the military drills on Thursday 23th of May 2024 in the Taiwan Strait, the north, south and east of Taiwan, as well as areas around the islands of Kinmen, Matsu, Wuqiu and Dongyin.

Military spokesman Colonel Li Xi said the joint exercises involving the army, navy, air force, and rocket force were a “strong punishment for the separatist acts of ‘Taiwan independence’ forces and a stern warning against interference and provocation by external forces”.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Defence said it had placed its military on “high alert” in response to China’s drills: "The launch of military exercises on this occasion not only does not contribute to the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait, it also highlights (China's) militaristic mentality".
