Geely Launches 11 Low-Orbit Satellites

Chinese automotive giant Geely Holding Group (0175.HK) announced on Saturday the successful launch of 11 low-earth orbit satellites, marking its second venture into space. The initiative aims to bolster precise navigation capabilities for autonomous vehicles as part of Geely's strategic expansion in the automotive technology sector.

Launched from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Sichuan province, the satellites represent a significant step in Geely's ambitious plan, with expectations to have 72 satellites in orbit by 2025 and a long-term goal of establishing a constellation of 240 satellites.

This follows Geely's inaugural satellite launch in June 2022, signaling the company's commitment to advancing autonomous driving technology. Beyond supporting high-precision positioning for self-driving cars, Geely envisions its satellite network serving various commercial functions, including connectivity to the consumer electronics sector.

Equipped with AI remote sensing capabilities, the satellites offer clear high-resolution imaging with a range of 1-5 meters (3.2-16.4 ft). Geely's initiative aligns with China's broader push for an integrated satellite network, encompassing communication, remote sensing, and navigation systems, as outlined in the country's five-year plan for 2021-2025.

While China's satellite networks have historically been dominated by the military, the government's opening of the space industry to private investment in 2014 has sparked a surge of commercial ventures. Geely's foray into satellite technology highlights the convergence of automotive and space industries, with a focus on advancing navigation capabilities for the burgeoning autonomous vehicle market.

As part of this broader trend, commercial companies, some with local government backing, are increasingly venturing into the satellite sector. Geely's recent satellite launch reinforces the company's commitment to technological innovation, positioning itself at the forefront of the evolving landscape in both automotive and space industries.
